Rooney Mara
President, Board of Directors

Rooney first traveled to Kenya in 2006 and in 2007, she formed Faces of Kibera to assist orphaned and vulnerable children living in Kibera. Faces of Kibera and Uweza have partnered on projects and supported each other since Uweza's inception. In 2011, both organizations decided to join forces to work more efficiently.


Amy Auguston
Vice President, Board of Directors

Amy volunteered in Nyeri and Kibera, Kenya in 2007 and co-founded our soccer league with a coach from Kibera. She recently returned from an 18-month stint working in Tanzania. She has worked with Human Rights Watch and EngenderHealth and currently works for International Rescue Committee.

KENYA:

Jennifer Sapitro
Managing Director

Jen first visited Kenya in 2006. She made six trips between Kenya and the United States before finally deciding to set up residence in Kibera. After receiving a MPH, with a concentration on International Health and Development in May 2011, she starting working full time for Uweza.


William Otieno Moi
Program Manager

William is a well-respected community organizer and businessman who grew up in Kibera. He founded and directs a savings and loans group called Kibera Agenda 4 Business Savings. He started working as Uweza's Sponsorship Coordinator in 2010 and became the head of all programs in Kenya in 2011.


Isaiah Apondi
Tutor

Teacher Apondi was born and raised in Kibera and his dream job is to teach. He has taught at severate private schools throughout Kibera for the past three years. He is one of two tutors leading Uweza's after-school tuition program and providing up to 70 students with academic coaching.


George Oluoch
Tutor

George moved to Kibera from rural Kenya in 2009. He has a P1 Certificate from a teachers college and has been teaching throughout Kenya for the last 5 years. When not working for Uweza, he teaches full time at a private school in Kibera.

Agnes Adongo
Cook

Agnes lives in Kibera with her husband and four children and is adored by all the children that come to Uweza's center. Her kitchen is frequently overcrowded with children waiting to talk to her and she makes the most delicious porridge in all of Kibera.

Mathew Musyoka Muema
Sponsorship Coordinator

Mathew was born in Kibera and has worked as a children's social worker with many organizatons in Kibera. He works with Uweza to manage all of our current child sponsorships as well as screening and recruiting new children for the program.

Becky Gitau
Manager, Counseling Program

Becky has a B.A. in Counseling and currently develops and coordinates all of Uweza's counseling activities. She created and oversees the "Generation Teen Club" which provides life skills coaching for youth. Becky has previously served in positions with the Kenya Counseling Organization and Red Cross International.

Charles Kioko Kaindi
Team Manager, Soccer Program

Charles started coaching at age 17 while still in high school and has over 12 years of experience coaching for teams in Kibera and throughout Nairobi. He received certification as a Physical Education Instructor from a coaching college in 2006. He currently coaches Uweza's Under-18 team.


David Alal Otieno
Assistant Team Manager, Soccer Program

Tilen is an active soccer player in Kibera and plays on two teams, one of which he started. He has coached with Uweza since 2009. His ambition is to coach for the Kenyan Premier League. He has experience coaching every category within Uweza's club and currently coaches the Under-14 team.

Joyce Khoy Okonji
Soccer Coach, Girls Team

Joyce coaches the two categories of Uweza girls teams. She is a coach and player for other clubs in Nairobi and serves as Assistant Coordinator for a league in the Dagoretti area. She is also an extremely talented singer and incorporates poetry, singing and life skills into her coaching.

Joash Ngaira Mundia
Soccer Coach

Joash was born and raised in Kibera and has played soccer since childhood. His skills earned him a scholarship to high school, where he played with Kenyan soccer professional McDonald Mariga. His past experience includes coaching a Senior Team from Kibera. He currently coaches the Uweza Under-12 team.

Said Mohamed
Soccer Coach

Said has been an avid soccer player since childhood. He grew up in Mombasa, on the Kenyan coast, and coached a team there for two years. He moved to Kibera in 2007. He now coaches Uweza's youngest category, the Under-8 team and assists with the girls teams when needed.

Gilbert Nyakundi Bita
Health Educator

Gilbert has worked with Uweza's soccer teams to educate them about HIV/AIDS. He has been active throughout Nairobi as a peer educator. His work with Uweza is on hold as he now resides in California.
